Indigenous Cultural Protocols
As we continue to build more inclusive, respectful, and collaborative relationships with Indigenous communities, understanding and honoring cultural protocols is essential. These protocols—such as how to conduct oneself at ceremonies, the appropriate use of language and symbols, seeking permission from knowledge keepers or Elders, and ways of giving thanks—are diverse and deeply rooted in specific Nations’ teachings and traditions.
Discussion Questions:
-
What do cultural protocols mean to you, and why are they important when engaging with Indigenous Peoples and communities?
-
Have you experienced or witnessed a moment where cultural protocols were respectfully followed—or overlooked? What did you learn from that experience?
-
How can non-Indigenous individuals and institutions learn to engage in good ways, without appropriating or tokenizing Indigenous knowledge and practices?
-
In what ways can we build awareness and accountability around Indigenous cultural protocols in our workplaces, schools, or communities?
Please share your thoughts with openness and humility. This is a space for learning and unlearning. If you are sharing protocols specific to a Nation, please name the Nation if appropriate, and respect the boundaries around sacred or private knowledge.
